About GroomTrove
GroomTrove started with a matted golden retriever named Biscuit, a pair of dull clippers, and a very frustrated Saturday afternoon. That was six years ago, and it's the moment our founder, Danielle Marsh, decided that pet parents deserved better information before they spent their money on grooming gear that just doesn't work.
How It Started
Danielle spent nearly a decade working as a professional groomer at a mobile grooming service in the Pacific Northwest, handling everything from anxious Chihuahuas to double-coated Bernese Mountain Dogs. Over the years, she noticed the same pattern: customers would show up with brand-new clippers, brushes, and shampoos bought based on flashy packaging or a five-star rating with no real substance behind it. Most of these products ended up in a drawer within a month.
She started keeping a private notebook rating every tool she used on the job, noting which slicker brushes actually pulled undercoat without scratching skin, which clipper motors could handle a full-body trim without overheating, and which shampoos genuinely helped with itchy, flaky skin versus just smelling nice. That notebook eventually became the seed of GroomTrove, launched in 2022 with the goal of turning years of hands-on grooming experience into honest, practical buying advice for everyday pet owners.
Today, GroomTrove is run by a small team of contributors that includes working groomers, a veterinary technician, and pet owners who test products in their own homes with their own animals — not just in a sterile studio setting.
How We Review and Pick Products
We don't accept payment from brands in exchange for favorable reviews, and we don't publish a recommendation for a product we haven't personally tested or thoroughly vetted. Our process typically includes the following steps.
- Hands-on testing: Whenever possible, we buy the product ourselves or request a sample, then use it in real grooming sessions across different coat types, from short-haired cats to thick-coated huskies.
- Multi-week trials: For tools like clippers and dryers, we don't just judge first impressions. We track performance, noise level, heat buildup, and durability over several weeks of regular use.
- Expert input: Our reviews are checked by team members with professional grooming or veterinary backgrounds, who flag anything that could pose a safety concern for pets or owners.
- Comparative analysis: We test similar products side by side so our rankings reflect genuine differences in performance, not marketing claims.
- Ongoing updates: Product lines change, and so do our reviews. We revisit our top picks periodically to make sure the recommendations still hold up.
What Makes GroomTrove Trustworthy
We know the pet product review space is crowded with sites that reword manufacturer descriptions and call it a review. GroomTrove is built differently.
- Every review is written or reviewed by someone with real grooming experience.
- We disclose when a product was provided to us for free or when a link on our site is an affiliate link. These disclosures never influence our final rating.
- We highlight downsides and limitations of products, not just the positives, because we'd rather lose a sale than mislead a pet owner.
- We prioritize pet safety in every recommendation, particularly with clippers, dental tools, and anything involving blades or heat.
Our mission is simple: help you skip the trial-and-error phase we all went through with Biscuit's grooming routine, and get straight to the tools that actually make grooming easier, safer, and less stressful for both you and your pet.
Have a question about a review, a product suggestion, or feedback on something we got wrong? We'd genuinely like to hear from you. Reach out through our contact page, and a real person from the GroomTrove team will get back to you.
